Final Humour Assignment

For our humour assignment Joelle and I decided to make a comic strip of The Real Housewives of Vancouver. It is funny because the television program is local to this city, and so we recognize places that the housewives got to. It is also funny because of the over exaggerated life styles the housewives live. The comic strip is called The Stuck-Up Housewives of Vancouver and it involves two pages; one where the housewives are clothes shopping and one where they are food shopping.
The comedy is satire because it is very sarcastic and over exaggerated at the same time. It starts off with Jody (one of the housewives) trying to find her iPhone in the pile of blackberry’s in her house. This is over exaggerated but true in a way because they all have multiple phones and unnecessary technology. It then goes on to talk about Jody’s extravagant ‘coats’ which usually look like a fur rug wrapped around her body. In the comic she says she got it from Jordan’s Carpets which is the big carpet shop and makes the whole situation funnier because she does not know how ridiculous she looks.
In the second page the housewives have gone food shopping and Ronnie complains that her personal chef can never get the right ingredients so she has to get them herself, which is obviously such a pain. Then Mary tries to join the conversation and says how there was actual dirt on her lettuce one time. Reiko gives a sarcastic gasp and Ronnie once again puts Mary down, Christina comes to Mary’s defence and suggests that they go get drunk. All of this is funny and is satire because it is over exaggerating the things that the housewives do that are so ridiculous.
The whole comic strip is satire and fits into the criteria of satire because of the over exaggerating. All of the little things that make The Real Housewives so funny have been completely over exaggerated and the characters are made to look ridiculous. To find this comic strip funny you have to have watched the show, because there are a lot of things that happened during the program which makes the comic strip funnier.
Reflection
Making a humorous piece is harder than it looks. Most of all because everybody likes different types of comedy and it’s hard to write the parts that actually make people laugh. That’s why satire is an easier kind of comedy to write because it’s not the laugh out loud kind of comedy, it is more the chuckle to yourself kind. The comic strip also only really applies to people that watch the Real Housewives of Vancouver otherwise the comic strip isn’t really funny at all. Overall I think I’ll leave the humorous writing to the funny people in the world J

English Humour Writing Assignment

My book is The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. In my opinion the book uses satire humour and a little bit of farce. As most people know from the movie Andrea Sachs works for the most famous magazine editor in the world and is the most high maintenance magazine editor in the world. She makes ridiculous requests and demands to her staff including Andrea with little information on what she wants. The farce parts of the book are parts where for example Andrea has gone all the way across New York to find a shop that Miranda (the editor) wants something from, only to come back and find that she already had what she wants and now Miranda wants something completely different. The wild goose chases are very farce with lots of misunderstandings and miss-timings. A funny farce moment was when the whole magazine office thought that Miranda was not coming in until the afternoon and everybody was completely relaxed, suddenly the call came that Miranda was in the elevator and on her way up, the whole office went crazy cleaning up, changing flats for high heels and everybody ran to their work places and practically hid. Miranda is greatly feared; she could make or break your career in a second.
On the Satire side of things Andrea is very non-fashionable, and makes fun of those who care so much about fashion. She is the complete opposite of what type of assistant Miranda would usually go for. Miranda rarely says please or thank you or even a simple hello and this aggravates Andrea, she likes to be very sarcastic around Miranda to see if she would get thank you. For example Miranda said to Andrea her famous catch phrase  ̍That is all  ̍instead of thank you and Andrea said not so under her breath ̍Your Welcome!   ̍Which Miranda was not at all pleased with and gave Andrea a stern talking to. From then on Andrea made sure that Miranda did not hear her sarcastic comments. This didn’t stop Andrea being completely sarcastic about her job to her friends and family. She had been told many times that most girls would die for her job, which she couldn’t believe and would often reply that  ̍if they did not die for the job they would die doing the job  ̍. Sleep deprivation, starvation and crazy errand running all came as part of the package. Overall I thought it was a funny book, because some of the things she had to do for Miranda were completely unbelievable and impossible but she managed to do them.  Andrea was the most ridiculous person for the job yet the most perfect. It was funny and tense and the same time, and I was always wondering what she was going to have to go through next.

Third Satire Post

The first link is the movie trailer for the The Disaster Movie which came out in 2008. Its a movie about the end of the world but all the greatest characters, actors, singers, and other celebrities are involved. The movie over exaggerates all of the most well things about each character. For example Hannah Montana is crushed by a huge boulder and is still perfectly preppy while she dies and is advertising her new album while everybody around her is screaming and running away. There are other characters such as the characters from Sex and the City, Enchanted, Juno, Hancock, the Incredible Hulk and many more. It's funny because they are over exaggerating and mocking the celebrities in a terrible situation. The second link is an article from The Onion. The article is about an Osprey that devours a lion as appose to the other way round, it is satire because it over exaggerates the power of a 3 pound bird which realistically could never take on a 400 pound lion. Its funny because it is turning the food chain upside down and if the Osprey eats lions... does that make it top of the most famous food chains? It affects almost every animal, and what if all the animals decide to eat whoever they want? Now this could lead to the end of the world!

Second Satire Post

Please remember to keep your phones on throughout the movie.

Some cinemas are finally going to allow the use of mobile phones during showings.Who wouldn't want the light from 75 mobile phones surrounding them while watching a beautiful romance? Or the constant ring tones, and vibrations going through their seats?

As we all know every teen has the attention span of a goldfish and must use their phones to entertain themselves for the dreadful long time of 90 minutes. The constant clicking of the phone keys will accompany the incredibly loud crunching of the popcorn, and we wont be able to hear the movie at all! Fantastic! As this is what everybody wants, please do not forget to bring your phones, turn them on loud, and remember to text and call throughout the whole movie. Thank you for your consideration and co-operation.

First Satire Blog Post

Skiing or Snowboarding which is more dangerous?

It is said that snowboarding tends to be more dangerous than skiing, but recent studies have shown that being a skier has brought on bullying all over the skiing nation.

A 14 year old girl, who cannot be named due to any more attacks happening, went on a fabulous skiing holiday and bumped into a group of snowboarders that she knew from school. She was chased down the side of a mountain and had a near escape with a cliff. The hatred between snowboarders and skiers is so large and terrifying nobody wants to be know as a skier. Billy, a  young boy with a skiing t-shirt was brutally attacked in the boys changing room by a gang of snowboarders.

Other cases have even caused death and other horrible injuries. A snowboarder, by the name of Bruce, grabbed onto a skiers pole and managed to break the skiers arm off. If you see any of these violent attacks take place, please report these events to 'Protect The Skiers', a new organization designed ti help those that have gone through these traumas.

What is funny?

I think that comedians that take every day matters and make fun of it is really funny. For example Michael McIntyre is an English comedian and is amazing at taking ordinary things and turning them into jokes. He is quite camp and his facial expressions and voices are hilarious. I also like the comedians on Mock the Week, it is a tv show where about 6 comedians make fun of the weeks newsor other topics, they have to come up with everything on the spot it is super funny and smart.. Ms Swan is a Mad tv production and Ms Swan is kind of crazy and is easily confused about many things but she is funny because nobody can control her.

The Migrant Experience

If you were a migrant worker you moved around to find work. The migrant workers were mostly farmers who had over extended and lost their farms. The dust bowl also moved lots of people down the California as it literally blew their crops away. It was very tough to  be a migrant worker because it was a long journey from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. When they got there lots of people were looking for the same types of jobs as them. California was not the promised land of their dreams. California was also affected by the depression. The wages of the migrant workers was so small that they couldn't support their families even when all the family members were working. The migrant workers still moved even when they were in California they moved where the crops needed to be harvested. So when it was potato picking season they moved to potato farms and the same thing happened with things like cotton, lemons and oranges. When they had their jobs lots of derogatory language and stereotypical sayings were used when they were spoke to. When the The Arvin Migratory Labor Camp was set up the workers had a place to stay and when they weren't working or doing chores at the camp they often sang and told stories. As World War II started lots of migrant workers went off to fight in the army which was kind of the end of all the migrant working. Moving to California worked for the migrant workers because they had a job, but it didn't really work for them because of the really small wages, derogatory and stereotypical language and not being able to support their families as they would've wished.

What is the American Dream?

The American dream is the dream of a better life, mostly for farmers. The farmers wanted better lives for themselves and their families. They want to be their own bosses so that they are not treated badly because they are poor. They want to own their own land and house. Their dream is not to be wealthy and have motors it was personal success and their own property. The american dream was also the reason that so many people moved to California (the golden state) because it was said that you could have great success there.
